Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire

Project Type: Residential New Build

Formally a single plot with a large garden, adjacent to Berkhamsted School playing fields, planning permission was granted to subdivide the plot and construct this substantial 6,000sq.ft.
contemporary house built over 3 floors.

Opportunity was taken to utilise the topography of the site to create a semi basement fronting the access drive and two story’s to the private garden side.

The facade was curved to echo the shape of an established oak tree within the garden. The main rooms were positioned on the top floor to take advantage of the wide uniterrupted views
overlooking the playing fields. Large areas of glazing were fitted to optimise the views on the upper floors. Key to the design was incorporating features such as a lift, level
thresholds and a large wet room for life time living.

A simple palette of materials were used to break up the mass of the elevations with large sweeping eaves to create horizontal banding at each level.
